We all know people who make New Year resolutions but I don’t make them because they are ineffective, lack commitment, fail to identify the reasons for change and never unveil the blanket of fear that comforts failure.
New Year resolutions are ineffective because true change requires hard work. Real change requires a plan of action that clearly outlines how you intend on achieving your goals. A plan will also equip you with the tools to handle obstacles you may encounter along the way. This is important because people underestimate the amount of energy that is required to change any portion of one’s life.
How many people do you know who follow through with their New Year resolutions? Exactly what I thought – very few. People will make all kinds of announcements but they are just that – cries into the wind.
I have found that lack of commitment will derail a person from reaching his or her goal. Why? Most people don’t have the proper motivation to keep them focused on their goal. Some don’t have enough faith in themselves. In order to be committed, I believe you need proper motivation, faith in yourself and clear focus. If you do not have faith in yourself, it will be hard to manifest the desires of your heart. You have to be able to see yourself achieving your goal as though it has already happened.
When a person fails to identify the reasons for change, he or she does not have a strong foundation to build upon. You must identify the reasons you want to change because they will be what keeps you motivated when you feel like giving up. Your reasons will help you deflect the things that will draw you away from your goal.
Over the years, I have found that fear has kept many people from achieving their goals. Fear has prevented them from taking action. Why? Some people have a fear of failing, a fear of leaving their comfort zone, a fear of success or a fear of the unknown. Whatever the fear, you must be ready to face it. You can only move forward when you can walk through your fear.
It has been my experience that people fail to achieve their goals or follow through with New Year resolutions because they have not taken an honest assessment of their life. All most people want is to make a list of goals they would like to achieve, and forget about them.
People have the unrealistic expectation that scribbling a few things down on paper before Dec. 31, will transform their lives in the coming year. True change requires more planning than a few minutes before the stroke of midnight.
Each of us, at some given point, has a desire to change our life or at least some aspect of our life. Change is possible because we all possess the ability to transform our lives into whatever we desire.
So what you can do now that 2010 has arrived? You can write down your goals, what you want to achieve this year or in the future. Below each of your goals, write a specific reason why you want to achieve this goal. Review your goals on a daily basis and you should post them in a place where you can constantly see them.
Remember, a goal requires clear vision, motivation, faith and focus.
